PROJECT OVERVIEW
ARCHITECTURE
The existing plan in this unit was a maze of small, enclosed spaces that concealed the unit’s potential. Our goal was to consolidate as much of the programmatic functions as we could while improving circulation. We accomplished this by mirroring the small existing galley kitchen with the bathroom and opening the new kitchen onto the living room. The new open plan revealed stunning views of the Hudson river that can now be experienced as soon as one enters the unit.
INTERIOR DESIGN
A “suburban home in the big city” was our client’s request and what better way to achieve this desired aesthetic than drawing upon inspiration from an upstate farmhouse while still incorporating modern touches and finishes… From the walnut wide planked floors to the bright white shaker-style cabinetry, this project exudes that homey feeling all while being situated in a modern high rise building.
PROJECT COORDINATION
When renovating in a high rise building you will always experience the obstacles of existing risers, valves and access points that run through multiple units in a line and need to remain. The challenge is that many of these elements are not “discovered” until after demo and final field conditions are all unveiled.
When we demo'd this project, we uncovered values in the floor of the bathroom and our team needed to rework the kitchen cabinet layout to essentially box in valves for future access. This enabled us to eliminate what would be an awkward step up into the kitchen creating a smooth transition. We don't think anyone would realize now that the beautiful open kitchen use to be a small bathroom!
